BLIND EYES AND DEAF EARS Author: Charli Disclaimer: I do not annoyingly own anything potc related- it all belongs to Disney and the mouse! Summary: Captain Jack’s betrayal during your absence changes a lot about your personality as you finally wake up to the nasty reality of a pirate lifestyle. Angst filled one shot. Author's Note: Ok sorry about the angst! It is very unlike me but the inspiration hit during the forgotten love role-play (which is very depressing at the moment) and it turned into a plot bunny that just wouldn’t hop off!! Read and review please. :) * * * * * Finally you arrive at the gates to your comfortable home throwing open the door and bounding out of the small stuffy carriage that had brought you down the dusty, bumpy tracks out of the main hustle and bustle of Tortuga. The driver reaches over to bring out your small suitcase and hands it to you with ease. It had only been a week away but now you were dieing to see him again you were painfully close to his arms once more. Your heart leapt at the prospect and that bright white smile flashed at the driver thanking him for bringing you so far away to this secluded, undetectable location and giving him a handsome tip for his troubles. He nodded back relieved with your generosity and waved as the carriage moved off down the track throwing dust clouds back to where you were standing so it slithered round your ankles. You watched as the vehicle bumped into the distance, the picture complimented by the magnificent Caribbean sunset beside it. The strong oranges, dusky pinks and deep ruby reds split their way across the darkening sky and reflected on the bobbing, choppy ocean leaving everything at a dramatic moment. The light cast a harsh shadow on the cliffs behind you and the house, accentuating the smooth rocks and perfect appearances but in places the light would catch on nocks and crannies showing darkness and the nasty surprises that would be invisible to any unsuspecting person until they reached it and their life crumbled before them. You sigh happily pleased to be home once again. It was a new feeling for you to have somewhere to go back to on land and a specific someone to greet every time. With this thought root firmly in your mind you are drawn forwards towards the small iron gates. You undo them with ease but stay silent and pull your case inside behind you. The house looked as warm as you felt with the sun warming the right side of your body but you noticed on closer inspection that only a few lights were shining from one upstairs window. The flicker of candle light danced behind your bedroom glass and instantly you knew the whereabouts of your new husband. It was four months today and your home coming would no doubt be celebrated in his own unique way. You had intended to stay with your mother for one more day but could not bear the thought of being away from him on the special anniversary. You were suffering with enough homesickness as it was. It would be the perfect surprise you thought happily reaching the small white front door that was built into the cliffs. The whole house overlooked the vast ocean and this had been one of the few specific requirements your husband had wanted for your new home together. The wood on the door was warm beneath your fingers as you pushed it open silently not wanting to let him know you were home yet and anticipating the surprise and happiness on his face. The small case you had brought was discarded simply by the side of the hall and your shoes shortly joined so you could feel the bare wooden floorboards between your toes but it felt strangely cool. The house was in darkness apart from the light you had seen in the upstairs bedroom and that also struck you as unusual. The general maid that your husband had hired shortly after the arrival at this house, much to your delight, was normally very efficient. Perhaps she was ill today. Slowly you walk down the hall in semi darkness, only a few shadows thrown into the room from various open doors where the light was creeping through the window panes, and reach the bottom stair of the small staircase. A sudden noise to your left makes you jump as a white face appears in the doorframe. It was only your maid and you smiled, after a few seconds of shock, bringing one finger to your lips to silence her before heading further towards to your bedroom and closer to your husband’s arms. However your maid’s red sore eyes and quickly shaken head to stop you going upstairs fly straight over your head. The silent warning remained just that; silent and undiscovered. Your fingers skim up the banister as you creep higher, the darkness surrounding you like an oppressive black cloak but the flickering warm light beneath the door guides the way to him. You’re trembling in happy anticipation and slip down the small corridor to the room, making sure to miss the squeaky rustic floorboards giving away that secret presence. Your fingers touch the wood of the door and a smile breaks out on your face as you hear movement from inside. He is still awake obviously. One hand reaches down to the cool door handle and turns it silently feeling the click as it releases beneath your grasp. Your heartbeat quickens as you push it open rapidly but then everything stops all together, your heart missing a beat and a noise is heard on your suddenly dry throat. Your brown-eyed gaze follows the floor, picking up the trail of discarded clothes that line a passionate path to your bed. His off white shirt lies twisted in a heap at the beginning of the trail, the red and white sash in a pool shortly after and you start shaking as the breeches are discarded on the floor entangled with a ripped blue dress. Silently your eyes climb higher to your husband on your antique bed staring at you from his naked position, the candlelight dancing on his scarred and tanned skin. You notice all too painfully that those strong, muscular arms you wanted to be wrapped in are actually around a young, equally naked brunette, her long legs wrapped around his waist and head thrown back as she arrogantly surveys you. You register nothing for a moment before your gaze snaps away from your husband and his girl reaching forward to slam shut the door. It leaves you in the same darkness as before but the scene keeps replaying in your eyes as a horrific nightmare stained and forever etched into your memory. You start to walk away, getting faster as you go and those squeaking floorboards that you had strategically missed before groan filling the whole house with your unvoiced wail of despair, grief and hatred. You grope blindly to find your way in the darkness but thankfully your fingers touch the cool wooden banisters guiding your sprint down the stair case and past that white warning face in the doorway. You suddenly register what she had done before; understanding that ignored warning but now it was all too late. These heart-wrenching images would scratch their way through your heart and mind causing nothing but pain and grief. Your maid does nothing to stop you as you run past, your mind is a blur and there is only the sound of your heart hammering and magnifying in your ears. You completely miss the shout of your cheating husband and the thuds as the bedroom door is wretched open. He only sees the fleeting glimpse of your hair streaming through the front door before you have disappeared from view again, maybe even forever. He struggles to run after you whilst doing up the breeches that were torn from his betraying activities. You run through the small garden to the iron gate that you passed through so happily, so unsuspectingly mere minutes before making your heart pang at your blindness and stupidity. Reaching the cliff edge, you have nowhere else to go, nothing except that dangerous sea at the bottom of the steep cliff face. In your blindness you don’t see the large protruding rocks and stumble, your hands flailing out to break the fall and stop yourself and fortunately you land on the dusty dirt track. Slowly you drag yourself to a sheltered corner in one of those black crevices, salty tears stinging your knees as they drip onto the painful cuts and scraps but it is not nearly as painful as the emotions you are experiencing. The sun can not define your shape in the small hole and the relieving darkness surrounds you signifying everything that had just happened, betrayal, grief and an end to all those smooth appearances and happy bright relationships when you had not known or suspected that you would be the next person to have their life crumble away. A pale face appears in front of the hole, climbing next to your grieving form. There is barely enough space for just you but she eases in slowly making sure she can comfort her friend. No words are spoken but she wraps her arms around your limp body, her pale face on your shoulder and the pale hands clutching your own bringing comfort and a friendship which you had forgotten in the haste for your betraying husband’s arms. Now clutching each other through fear and grief you find a small glimmer or love and solace, completely ignoring the skating footsteps of your pirate as runs semi naked after you, ready to talk his way out of the damaging actions. Sitting there you suddenly realise how his love had made you blind and you had forgotten and ignored anything else that was telling you what he had been doing whilst you were away and any other people who cared about you. As he makes his way closer to your hiding place he doesn’t realise that his pleading words of love and devotion will never mean the same as when they fell on the blind eyes and deaf ears of a young girl in love. THE END Author’s note: Hope that wasn’t too depressing for you or then maybe it wasn’t depressing enough so read and review so I know!! Thank you. |
