CHAPTER 1

The room was dark and had an unnatural chill in the air. Even though rooms can’t possibly have feelings, one would feel the unnatural darkness and eerie sense that they were being watched. Suddenly the room’s silence was shattered by the sound of splitting wood and the heavy voices of men outside.

A few more loud booms and the wood held strong until it finally gave in and the door swung open into the room. A breeze of air transferring from the room to mix with the air outside lent to a sudden tingling down the spines of the men who were standing outside in the doorway, staring into the dark room.

One of the men shivered, “I don’t like this Cap’n. Something about it feels… unnatural.”

The other man clapped a hand on the shorter man’s shoulder, “Relax Gibbs. Sometimes you’re a tad too superstitious for your own good.” With that he strode into the room, his lantern throwing dancing shadows on the walls.

Gibbs frowned, “Kept me alive so far, didn’t it?”

The Captain grinned to himself, ruffling through the boxes to see if there was anything of value. “Aye.”

“I mean, it pays to be cautious. Don’t want to tempt the fates and all tha’. I’ve known of plenty of other men who didn’t pay their tribute to lady luck and wound up regretin’ it.”

The Captain nodded along mindlessly, still looking through the crates and not finding much of anything. Disappointed, he decided to look in just one more crate before leaving this room all together. Opening the crate his happy demeanor returned as he discovered rum.

“Gibbs!” The man called over his shoulder, “Help me with this crate!”

Gibbs stopped his rambling and peered over the man’s shoulder. “Find anythin’ good Cap’n?”

The Captain straightened and shot Gibbs a self-satisfied look. “Of course I did Gibbs! I’m Captain-“

“Yeah, yea, yeah, I know.” Gibbs said, waving his hand in dismissal.

The taller man pouted for a moment before looking upon the rum and regaining his cheer. “Well, let’s get a move on!”

The both got at opposite ends of the crate and on the count of three they both lifted it as one, yet at the same moment and unnoticed bottle rolled behind Gibbs foot, jarred by the movement in the small room and, with a yell, Gibbs lost his footing and left the Captain with all of the weight.

The sudden weight caused the Captain to backpedal into the wall but he determinedly held onto the case, making sure none of his ‘precious cargo’ was damaged.

Once he had settled the crate onto the ground, he walked over and held a hand out to Gibbs who had bumped his head.

“Sorry Cap’n.” He grunted out, standing up with the Captain’s help. “Damn bottle appeared out of nowhere!”

“That’s all right Gibbs.” The Captain said, turning back to the rum crate. “It…”

His words trailed off as when he turned to look at the crate he noticed the wall where he had bumped into, there was a deep crack and he could see a bit of yellow paper poking out.

“What’s all this now?” He muttered curiously, walking up to the wall and examining the paper.

Gibbs walked up next to him as the Captain pulled out the paper from the wall and turned it over in his hands.

“What is it Cap’n?” He asked, but the Captain was too absorbed in the paper to notice. “Jack!”

Captain Jack Sparrow slowly looked up from the paper with confusion written on his face. “It’s a map.”

“A map?” Gibbs asked. “What’s so confusing about a map?”

Jack remained silent for a moment before showing the map to Gibbs. Gibbs saw the normal map markings with what seemed to be a legend and a key, but it was covered in strange markings that he had never seen before. It seemed very old, yet in remarkably well kept condition, especially in a room that seemed to have a lot of moisture in it.

He turned it around and there were more of the strange markings, but it seemed to be in a list fashion, almost as if they were directions.

“Have you ever seen anythin’ like this before Cap’n?” Gibbs asked.

Jack shook his head, still looking at the paper in mystique. “Never.”

A loud boom that seemed to come from above them and yelling started up and Jack frowned, sticking the map in his pocket for later.

“Come on, I’m not sure how long we can keep these bloody French under control. How they can come into the Caribbean and not expect to be raided by pirates is beyond me.” Jack and Gibbs grabbed the crate again and hauled it up the stairs.

As soon as they left, the lantern that they had been using went out and the smoke seemed to curl into strange shapes for a moment before dissipating. An echo of a laugh could be heard and the deep chill returned to the room.

In a cave, familiar to the likes of the good pirate Captain, a dark figured appeared, seemingly from the shadows, and slid over the ground to a skeleton that was lying on a pile of gold pieces.

A deep and menacing voice started speaking, but it was not words that any mortal had ever heard before and lived to speak of it. Suddenly a green haze seemed to come over the skeleton and it seemed to solidify and regain its human features. Soon, the haze melted away and left a heavily breathing human lying on the ground. A moment of confusion surfaced in his eyes and then remembrance and then anger.

“SPARRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOWWWW.” The being screamed, voice bouncing off the cave walls and screaming back at him.

The dark figure grinned and looked down at the human. “Welcome back to life… Barbossa.”
